Herbalife Tea Concentrate contains approximately 85 mg of caffeine. If you’re worried about the caffeine content, you can drink other teas. What should you drink instead? What teas cause miscarriage during pregnancy?
When one of our customers asked, “Can Herbalife tea cause miscarriage,” I was a bit perplexed. From what I know, this Herbal Tea Concentrate is safe for everyone, unless taken in high doses. I know a lot of women who are drinking it while pregnant and they didn’t have a problem with it.
Can It Cause Miscarriage?
There are no reports or complaints about Herbal Tea Concentrate causing miscarriage or uterine contractions. If in doubt, just ask your doctor. Generally, it is safe in moderation. Large amounts can definitely affect your pregnancy, just like other herbal teas.
Unfortunately, some doctors are skeptical about Herbalife tea. So, they would strongly advise avoiding it.
Herbal Tea Concentrate contains green tea and oolong tea. These teas have caffeine, which is known as a natural stimulant. That said, your doctor may not recommend drinking any tea during pregnancy.
Caffeine is said to cross the placenta. Your baby has an immature liver. In that case, it becomes difficult for the baby to break down the caffeine, even if the amount is safe.
However, in a report published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, researchers found that:
“Moderate caffeine consumption (less than 200 mg per day) does not appear to be a major contributing factor in miscarriage or preterm birth. The relationship of caffeine to growth restriction remains undetermined.”
On the other hand, if you take too much caffeine while you’re pregnant, your baby might be born preterm, suffer from birth defects, or with low birth weight, according to research.
Furthermore, high caffeine intake while pregnant may increase the chances of miscarriage or stillbirth.
Thus, it’s not just Herbalife tea you must avoid. Rather, you must avoid caffeine altogether.
However, the risks are lower when you limit your caffeine intake to 300 mg a day. So avoid black tea.
Then again, your genetic makeup may make you sensitive to caffeine effects.
If you need to drink Herbal Tea Concentrate, you should limit it to once a day to avoid consuming too much caffeine per day.
Some herbal teas have risky side effects. That’s because they have other compounds that can be unsafe for pregnant women.
What Teas That Cause Miscarriage During Pregnancy?
Most herbal teas are made from spices, herbs, and dried fruits. Even if they don’t have caffeine, they have other compounds that can cause miscarriage or preterm labor.
For instance, fenugreek, sage, licorice, motherwort, blue cohosh, and black cohosh are known to cause miscarriage.
Frankincense and lovage can cause menstrual bleeding.
If you drink borage or motherwort teas, your baby is at high risk of suffering from birth defects.
Furthermore, chamomile tea may cause poor blood flow, thereby, affecting the baby’s heart’s health.
Then, there are herbal teas that can interact with the medications you are taking. If you wish to drink Herbalife tea, talk to your doctor, especially if you’re using medicines to help with your pregnancy.
The lack of research doesn’t make it safe or unsafe to drink Herbalife tea or herbal tea for that matter during pregnancy. It is best for you to just avoid teas altogether.
Are There Teas that Can Be Safe During Pregnancy?
Because there’s not enough research to find the truth about the effects of herbal teas during pregnancy, your doctor may not recommend you to drink any tea.
If he may suggest it, the amount is minimal.
1. Raspberry Leaf
However, a few studies are suggesting that raspberry leaf is safe for pregnant women. Research showed that it might shorten labor by 10 minutes.
But your doctor may not recommend it during the first trimester. If you wish to drink it safely, make sure to do it during the second and third trimesters.
2. Peppermint Tea
Another herbal tea you can safely drink during pregnancy is peppermint. It’s caffeine-free. It may also help in calming your stomach muscles. That’s why it’s perfect for relieving flatulence, vomiting, and nausea during early pregnancy.
However, peppermint tea is known to relax your sphincter. It’s the muscle found between your stomach and esophagus. Relaxing this muscle causes stomach acids to flow back up. As a result, you will experience heartburn.
Furthermore, it may interact with antacids. Thus, avoid this tea if you are taking this drug.
In general, peppermint tea is safe during pregnancy as long as you take it in reasonable amounts. You may drink up to two cups a day. However, you must always follow what your doctor has prescribed or instructed.
3. Ginger Tea
Ginger tea is also said to be safe during pregnancy. This is a great tea if you are experiencing nausea and vomiting. It also helps alleviate uterine cramping during early pregnancy.
Thus, when you face down morning sickness, you may consider this tea. However, you must not overdo it. Talk to your doctor about how you can safely drink ginger tea.
There are various herbal teas safe to be taken by pregnant women. Unfortunately, there are insufficient details about their effects on your unborn child.
You shouldn’t overindulge in drinking herbal teas or Herbalife tea. Herbal teas are said to limit iron and folic acid absorption.
But, in a scientific review published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the authors stated that:
From the available evidence, there is no need to advise any restriction on tea drinking in healthy people with no risk of iron deficiency
If you really want to drink herbal tea or Herbalife tea during pregnancy, talk to your doctor, or drink it in moderation.
What Causes Miscarriage?
Drinking Herbalife tea may not cause miscarriage. But other things can cause you to lose your baby. Keep in mind that most miscarriages happen for reasons that you can’t control.
1. Abnormal Chromosomes
Abnormal chromosomes are some of the causes of miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur because of the baby’s chromosomes, which contain the baby’s unique traits.
If your baby has the wrong number of chromosomes, he/she won’t grow normally.
You can’t prevent it from happening. However, it is said that getting pregnant over the age of 35 will increase your chances of miscarriage because of chromosome problems.
2. Diseases
If you develop an infection during weeks 13 through 24, it may affect the development of your baby. It’s especially true if the infection is caused by cytomegalovirus or German measles.
Diabetes may also affect your baby’s ability to come in full-term. It’s also true with thyroid disease, autoimmune disorders, and lupus.
3. Smoking
Now, if you smoke, the risk of miscarriage is greatly increased. Even if you don’t smoke, but your partner does, then the risk of miscarriage is high.
4. Alcohol and Illegal Drugs
Heavy drinking can also be a factor, as well as the use of illegal drugs.
